SELLERS BEWARE!!!!!!
Tips to recognizing a false response to your ad

When someone replys to your ad please take note of the following tricks by long distance responders as discussed on our forum; reprinted here for your convenience:

"I believed this was referred to a couple months ago, but I've come across some information on how it works. You advertise your kayak (or motorcycle or whatever) and get some very excited responses, usually from foreigners who are more than willing to pay full price, the shipping and arrange payment through a stateside agent, attorney, etc. You get the check and there's a "mistake" in your favor, like $2,500 instead of $500, so he requests an immediate refund of the difference. In addition to your money, he's also getting your bank account number and other personal data. The original check, which appeared to be good, now turns out to be bad or recinded. I don't know how they work that, but apparently they can because they're continuing to do this with increasing frequency (I advertised a motorcyle in one place on the web and received 16 similarly worded responses from Africa, Australia, England, etc., or so they said). So, they get your boat, money and personal data. Of course, you have to be careful as a buyer, too. You don't want to get a stolen boat and/or give up personal data (I prefer to pay with Travelers' check or other method)." Bonneville

"A similar incident happened to my brother about 3 months ago when he was selling his beach catamaran. A person replied to his ad from South Africa. He sent him an e-mail and wanted the boat at the asking price of $6,000. He said he would send him $7,200 for the boat, and ask him to deposit the extra $1,200 in another account in the US for him. The extra money was supposedly for shipping. I don't know if this was a scam, or the guy was just trying to get some of his money out of South Africa into a US bank. I do know that they are limited to a certain amount that can be taken out of the country. Anyway, it sounded fishy, and he just told him to forget it. I agree, anything that sounds too good,....... well you know the rest."

"Don't answer them and simply ignore them.
